Offered here is a framed painting by American artist Francis West (1881-1971). It is oil on board and clearly signed in bottom right corner. West was known for his ships/marine, coastal, seascapes and land paintings. He also painted Native Americans. His work can be seen on murals in and around the Jamestown/Newport, Rhode Island areas, where he lived and had his studio, The Red Elephant. The painting measures 27 ½ x 17 ½; frame dimensions are 31 ¼ x 21 ¼. The coastal rocky shoreline sunset or sunrise scene becomes more vivid and pronounced at a distance; although I’ve found no classification of West being an Impressionist, from what I’ve seen of his work, I would say that he is an Impressionist. His use of oil paint is somewhat heavy and layered, almost gravel like, particularly in this painting. The cliff rock on the left is textured as is the surf coming in at bottom. This style of painting with the use of a palette knife helps to achieve depth and distance. The painting does not carry the initials of Francis West’s Red Elephant Studio or R.E.S. after his signature (1930-1960), so the painting was done either before or after these dates. In any event it is quite nice and beautifully framed. It maybe could use a mild cleaning. We offer items as we find them particularly fine art, leaving any serious cleaning or other to the professionals. This painting is in good to excellent age related condition. Enjoy.
