Offered here is a wonderful example of listed Norwegian/American artist John Olson Hammerstad (1842-1925). The oil on canvas is what I perceive to be a sheepherder atop a mountain tending his sheep. He is standing in the distance. Just about dead center you can see the red/orange color of his campfire. I believe the scene might be somewhere in Norway maybe overlooking the fjords. White and black sheep are roaming the rocky flats with pines in the far right background. Also in the background is water (lake, ocean) and mountains. The dark clouded sky allows for what I will surmise as a new day rising sun breaking through the clouds, spreading touches of sunlight across the rocky foreground, making way for a blue sky. The beautiful original gold framed oil on canvas measures 20 x 30; outside measurement of frame is 35 ½ x 25 ½. The frame has a tightly raised flower and leaf design and is in what I consider good age related condition. The painting at one time, I would say earlier than later, had a minor repair (patched on the backside and quite secure) but otherwise is in good age related condition. The repair is located about 1/3 up painting on right (see photo). It is of the white lamb above lamb in foreground near rock. This has not compromised the integrity of the painting and remains absolutely stunning. Sales tax must be collected for buyers living in or picking up in New York State. Local tax rate applies.
