Premier Designer Earrings made by William Spratling frequently called the Father of Mexican Silver. His hallmark designates that he made this pair of earrings in 1940.

Spratling was born in the United States in 1900 and after graduating college with a degree in architecture he became friends of William Faulkner. In 1929 he moved to Mexico where he became friends with Diego Rivera. It's interesting, when you read about famous artists, how they seem to have crossed paths in each others lives. Perhaps its because they are all interested in the same places and activities.

As a designer Spratling found pre-Columbian design and motifs to be a great influence on him. He worked out of Taxco which was a silver mining area. Many prominent silversmiths of the 1940's and 1950s worked in that area. He died there in 1967, at age 66, from injuries he sustained in a car accident.

Marked silver, screw back, 3/4" by 1/4" high and weighing 11.9 grams.
