A different and interesting vintage sewing tool, this needleholder is known as a mitrailleuse. It's designed to hold several sizes of needles, and the brass top is meant to turn as one selects the specific size of needle desired. It has a gold advertising banner along the length of the barrel saying "Kirby Beard & Co."
Most were made in England around the turn of the century, circa 1900. Although now not commonly found, back at the turn of the century they were used as advertising for a wide variety of companies. Made in several different colors, they were almost always in a marbelized finish. Gold is definitely an unusual color!
This one's in beautiful condition. So often they were kept in sewing boxes, where they ended up scratched and worn. This mitrailleuse is great, having just a very few tiny marks.
The brass ends are good. They are marked "Kirby Beard & Co. London" and "Best 50 English Needles". One brass end turns to allow access to a variety of sizes of needles.
Length is 2-1/4"; diameter is 3/4".
