This lovely dollhouse fireplace mantle is part of a lot that was recently purchased at an estate sale. The previous owner had a toy and hobby shop and these pieces (see last picture) were left over when it sold. All are 'new old stock' from the 1960's and 70's and most have the original box.
This mantle piece is made of solid mahogany with glued construction and measures 6 1/4" tall and the base (largest part) is 4 1/4" long and 1 3/4" deep. Two turned columns flank the firebox which is decorated with blue and white paper to replicate delft tiles. Four brackets support the candle shelves and two more columns flank the real glass mirror and support another shelf at the top.
Never used or displayed and in perfect condition with the original box. Both bear the original stickers: On piece, "Made in Colombia Exclusively for Bertha Casablanca, Miami Florida" Ref. 1024. The box sticker reads: "Referencia No, 1024". The box lid has tanned slightly but it is in otherwise perfect condition. Measures 6 1/2 by 4 3/4 by 2 1/4".
This furniture has a long and varied history and has been made and/or imported by several companies over the years. First made in the 1930's by Chester Waite of Lynnfield, MA and marketed by Block House as "Lynnfield". Production changed hands and locations several times and it was finally being made in Colombia and Taiwan and imported by Block House for Sonia Messer, Bertha Casablanca and possibly others. Some pieces are simply referred to as "Block House". Production ceased in the early 1980's. The Colombian pieces are made of indigenous mahogany with a hand rubbed finish while the pieces made in Taiwan are of a lighter colored wood with a shiny varnish.
The furniture is of an excellent quality with designs accurately representing various classical styles. It is true to 1" (1/12 or 1"=1') scale making it a popular choice for collectors.
Other furniture and miniatures shown in the second and last picture are not included. We will be adding the other pieces to our shop soon but feel free to ask about any of them in the meantime.
