German Dollhouse Furniture - Thonet-style Bentwood Parlor Set - Settee and Chairs - Large 1" Scale
This nice set of parlor furniture was made in Germany in the latter part of the 19th Century, around 1890. Patterned after the bent wood furniture of Michael Thonet (1796-1871) that became popular in the 1850's. The light, airy feel was a departure from the heavy Baroque styles preceding it and it was a popular choice for conservatories and sunrooms.
This set consists of a settee and three chairs, one with arms. Made of rattan with solid wood seats and assembled with tiny nails. The seats are upholstered in green flannel or felt.
These pieces are slightly larger than 1" scale mostly due to the height of the seats. The settee measures 4 1/2" wide, 4" deep and 4 1/2" tall (2" to seats). These dimensions are approximate and are taken at the extreme edges of the bent rattan. The actual seat size on the settee is 3 1/2" by 2 5/8". Shown in the last picture with more typically sized 1" (1/12) furniture.
The settee is stamped: "Germany".
All pieces are in remarkable condition with no damage other than some discoloration on the seat covers and some slight fraying of the fibrous rattan here and there.
