This charming old box is made of light wood and heavy cardboard and covered and trimmed in leather and fabric. Found with some thread and other sewing items (not worth including) but the lock may indicate that it was intended for jewelry.
Oval-shaped and measures approximately 8" long, 7" wide and 3" tall. The lid is hinged with fabric and the box sits on 4 round brass feet.
The body of this lovely box has a curved shape that was created by heavy cardboard. Upholstered with a wide band of embroidered ribbon and trimmed at top and bottom with strips of gold embossed leather. The bottom piece and lid are slightly larger ovals with edges wrapped in leather and the bottom is covered with a thin piece of beautiful patterned leather. The top is also covered in thin textured leather (or leatherette paper?) that has been painted in a horizontal Impressionistic manner that resembles water. Done in dark muted colors of gold, brown, green and rusty red. There was once a circle of leather or paper surrounding the keyhole but much of this is gone and another piece has broken away since the photos were taken. The interior is upholstered in ecru colored silk embossed with a charming lattice and bow design.
In nice sturdy condition with some minor losses to the leather trim and on the top surface where the paint has raised the grain of the thin leather. There are also several small holes (probably from a pin) on the top surface. The interior is nice with light foxing on the lid and a small stain in the center of the bottom area. No key.
