Vogue introduced the 10 1/2" Jan doll in 1959 and marketed her as a friend to their popular Jill doll. This first version was only made for 2 years and in 1961 she grew to be a 12" doll and suddenly became a big sister to Jill and little Ginny.
Although nicely made, the doll was less expensive than Jill and designed for a different market niche. It does not quite have the fine molding and beautiful face of the Jill doll. In spite of that, since production was limited she is harder to find and usually commands a higher price than a Jill doll. She did not have a specific wardrobe of her own and was meant to wear the same clothes as Jill.
Made of a hard vinyl body and softer vinyl head, rooted saran hair styled in either a pony tail or angel cut, blue sleep eyes with molded lashes and 4 hand-painted lashes on the outer eye.
This nice example has a lovely brunette angel cut wig and nice cheek and lip coloring. The 'skin' is also a nice even color (the hard plastic body on this doll is often found with fading, yellowing and/or warping). Her big blue eyes sleep easily.
Jan is looking fresh and cool in Vogue's dress #7402 from 1957. Orange and white striped cotton with a full gathered skirt and white and black trim on the darted bodice. Closes with 2 snaps and is tagged; "Vogue Dolls, Inc". The peach and white elastic girdle, white shoes and doll stand are also included.
In very nice condition with an exceptionally nice, full wig with no missing plugs and original neat hairdo. One eye (left in picture) is off-set a little and we have seen this in other Jan dolls. It is not enough to distract from her lovely face and sweet expression. Nice face paint with no chips or rubs and retains the finger and toenail polish. There is a slight warp on her back (the picture accentuates this) and also a little smudge on either outside calf, perhaps from another outfit or storage.
The dress is also in excellent condition; nice and crisp with no holes or damage. It has probably been laundered in the past (we gave it a light press) as the tag is slightly faded. The girdle is in only fair condition with fraying around the leg holes and a tear in the lace . Shoes are nice with no damage.
