Perfect for a foyer or hall, this lovely walnut fretwork shelf measures 22" tall, 15 1/2" wide and 5 1/2" deep.
Made of solid walnut, the flat back is one piece and the scalloped shelf and its support bracket are attached with flat head screws. The 7" diameter walnut mirror frame with original mirror is inset and glued in place. The back of this area is covered in brown paper.
This piece shows beautifully but is not flawless. The top finial has been repaired as has one curly-cue. Also a piece of wood has splintered away from the front of the support bracket at the point where the screw attaches it to the shelf. This does not seem to affect the integrity of the piece as this bracket is firmly attached to the back piece. The shelf can be pulled upwards slightly from the bracket but this would not occur in normal usage and gravity would hold it in place. It could, of course, be repaired if desired.
The mirror has several vertical dark age lines. The metal hanger is newer and was apparently moved down to avoid the damage to the upper finial area which may have, in fact, been caused by the original hanger. There are 3 small nail hole here.
We have tried to show the areas of damage and hope that the first picture is enough to show how lovely this old piece is. The beautiful wood has a dry finish with no varnish or other sealer and is very clean with no smoke or grease residue. We have lightly dusted it but did nothing to disturb the original finish.
