A lovely pair of pottery wall pockets measuring 7 1/2" long, 3 3/4" across at the widest part and would protrude from the wall about 2".
Made of pottery and glazed in beautiful bright colors; red-breasted bluebirds and daisies on an aqua background and trimmed on top and bottom with embossed basket weave patterns in dark green. We're not sure whether to call the over-glaze 'semi-matte or 'semi-gloss'. It is not the shiny glaze found on porcelain pieces and not the matte glaze found on most art pottery of the era.
We would call these 'transitional' pieces and date them to the 1920's-30s. The Victorian love of nature is depicted in the bird and flower motifs and the Art Deco influence is seen in the strong colors and geometric accents.
Both are incised; "Made in Japan" on the un-glazed back and are in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, repairs or glaze crazing. Evidence of usage on the interiors.
