This nice old wooden inkwell measures 3 1/4" tall to the top of the lid finial. The base is 1 3/4" tall and about 3" in diameter.
Made of turned wood with a quill hole and applied vertical double columns which create 6 panels, each hand painted with an enigmatic design of crescent moon, snake and perhaps small birds. The significance of this symbol (if there is one) is unknown. The designs were painted in gold over the black base enamel. The lid is also embellished with a geometric design in the same gold. The round bottomed glass inkwell fits rather loosely in the hole and may not be original to the piece.
No breaks or splits but quite a bit of wear and loss to the paint in the expected areas; around the lid finial and on the high spots around the base. The glass well has some black ink residue but no damage.
Stamped: "Germany" on bottom.
