Nice old crucifix, a reliquary crucifix, with the cross opening to reveal its contents. This one contains a labeled Agnus Dei and labeled S. Martyres and another label Venantius, we assume Venantius of Fortunatus, as he counseled Nuns in his life. We can see something under each of the labels, and lovely shiny gold colored decorations on three of the ends, typical of the lovely decorative work the Sisters of the religious order would do in preparing reliquary, this one was probably made for one Sisters personal use. The cross should have a turn screw that hold it closed, but it was damaged when we acquired this crucifix, originally on a rosary. Your local jeweler should be able to order the proper size and length for you. The crucifix is silver tone metal with black wood or material behind the nice Corpus of Christ; and on the back it is marked Roma, where the empty crucifix was made. It measures 1 & 7/8" long not counting the extra loop, and is 7/8" wide. It is in good condition with some wear from being loved for many years and the mentioned missing screw for the closure. The Corpus appears to be more of a brass or bronze color. Lovely item.
