Offering for sale a most wonderful old reliquary. This one is typical of those made by Nuns or Sisters of Religious Orders, in this case from Germany or other German speaking country. It is hand made of red satin oval covered card boards or possibly light weight wood with hand cut glass top, red fabric inside , and yellow fabric lining the sides. Inside this are second class representations of St Clara (Claire) and St Colete ( Colleta), plus an old Agnus Dei. In the center is the Paaschnagel, or nail ; I have always assumed this was made of wax, but really do not know the content of the nail. The reliquary has a solid back, with the exterior covered in red taffeta and a small hand made hanging loop on top. It measures 4" tall and 3" wide and is in very good condition. For those not familiar with reliquary, at one time these were plentiful and easy to acquire, they would be given to a devout Catholic by a Priest, a Sister possibly or Nun, or Bishop, ; some religious orders would pass out reliquary of a member of their order to help promote the cause of their becoming a Saint, etc. Unfortunately these are no longer easy to get, at least not free, and only available when a prior owner decides to part with theirs. This one has had at least three owners so far. It has been ours for over 2 years and we have really loved it. It is very rare to find these that were hand made by Sisters or Priests, most reliquaries were made to be handed out, this one was made for her / his personal use.
