Lovely old cross shaped medal for the Virgin Mary and Infant Jesus as Our lady of Einsiedein. It seems that Blessed Meinrad, while living in seclusion near a small lake, had a chapel built near his cell and placed a statue of the Blessed Virgin with the Infant resting on her arm, which had been given to him by the Abbess Hildegard, Superior of a convent in Zurich. In 948, a Church was built over the site of his prior chapel, and the Lord appeared and offered the Mass of Consecration. When the Bishop Conrad of constance arrived to celebrate Mass, a voice was heard to say" Stop Brother, the Church has been consecrated by God". Over the years many fires destroyed the Church several times, but the small old original chapel containing the original statue remained unharmed. This old medal has a lovely image of the statue on the front, and on the back "Souvenir d'einsiedein" It is a nice small size for a rosary, measuring 5/8" across and is in very good condition. It is of a silver tone metal, not sterling, but of good weight and in good condition with mild age wear only. We never had one of these before.
