Large old French medal for Virgin Mary, lovely image of her in nice detail surrounded by "Monstra Te Esse Matrem" latin for "Show thyself a mother". And on the back "Congregation Des Enfants De Marie" the Congregation of the Children of Mary, first opened to girls who were students or orphans in the care of the The Sisters of Charity (St Catherine Laboure's religious order). This medal is also sometimes called a Sodality medal. The empty rectangle on the back is where the name or initials of the owner would be engraved. This medal measures 1.5" tall and is in very good condition. It is cast in a silver tone metal of good weight, and assumed made in France due to the French language on the back. Most of these back then were cast in sterling, but this one may be a mixture of metals, although it will polish up nicely if desired. Lovely and hard to find older medal, from my personal collection.
