Fabulous rare find, this antique French porte montre, watch holder in fine bronze. It features a frame with stand of two cherubs or angels on a stand of leaves and vines with acorn finial at the top; in fabulous metalwork with even the faces of the angels in lovely detail. Mounted in this wonderful frame is the holder of fine blue enamel with gold gilt background with a center hand painted art cameo of an angel / devid; maybe a cupid? not sure, but we do see angel wings and also a pitchfork; hand painted original art and just lovely. Above this miniature art is the round opening to reveal the watch, which slips into the holder from the top, with a holder in the back. We are including the watch that was in this holder when we acquired it; it is a Venus movement, with beautiful face, tiny gold accents on the dial. it is marked inside as a Venus 57232, possibly made by the Schwarz Etienne Company, we were unable to find out much at all about this watch. It is missing the knob on the top, so we do not know if it is in working condition, but upon examining the interior works, it appears clean with nothing missing, so we will assume a good watch repair person could have it working. The porte montre is unmarked as to country or maker, we feel confident in attributing this to France, 1800's. We are very impressed with the details on this piece, notice even the detail on the little bottom of the baby angels, just lovely. The piece measures 7" tall and 4 & 1/2" wide at the wing tips. The watch viewing opening is 1 & 3/8" across. There may have originally been a round glass window in the round opening, just not sure. This is one of the prettiest porte montres we have ever seen.
