Offering for sale a wonderful antique papier mache ....Ok, it's not really a plaque, we don't know what it originally was, possibly a book front, daguerreotype cover, or maybe a lid for a box. What we do know is the workmanship, fabulous papier mache over wood, black background with hand painted gold gilt florals and inlaid mother of pearl, with tiny gold border decorations. Yes it does look like a Jennens, and probably is, but with only this small decorative piece, there is no signature. It measures 3" by 2 & 3/8", and the back is lined with a dark blue fabric with a feel of silk. There is a significant amount of the decorative border missing both on front and back, but the papier mache part is truly lovely, with only age crackling or crazing and no damage on that area. There was probably originally some hand painting over the m.o.p., as I see remnants of gold over one of the leaves. This would be beautiful framed or inset into another item such as a mirror top, etc; or for papier mache collectors and purists, simply displayed in its current beauty.
