Offering for sale a truly wonderful and rare table from the late 1800's. This table was made in England or areas surrounding such, the style of the top reminds us of some fine woodwork we have seen from Wales; and probably we believe for the India or Eastern Market. it features fabulous hand carved top, with plain center surrounded with ornate carvings including four peacock birds (hence the belief of its intended market when made). Both of the lovely shaped sides also intricately carved as well as the cross piece. The wood is a rich reddish dark brown, with the top darker than the sides from age, a truly lovely wood patina. We did not even attempt to clean this table when purchased, it is truly beautiful. This belonged to a wealthy family in England; it had been in their family for several generations; and brought to us by antique dealers who shop only in England and France. It is in very good condition with no cracks or significant chips and only minor wear on the wood itself. We do believe the top has been removed at one time, possibly for an unknown repair or possibly height adjustment, not sure, and when screwed back onto the sides, the top of the sides extend just slightly out from the top and are visible. This could of course be adjusted by a woodworker if one desired. The table top measures 20" by 12 & 1/2" and the table height is 25 & 1/4". The base width is 19 " and depth is 12 & 1/2 ". A truly remarkable piece. Very sturdy as well !
