900 Silver/10K Gold Plated Filigree Bow/Trombone Clasp - image 1 of 7

Circa 1910-1940 this enchanting Silver and Gold Plated Filigree Bow or Ribbon Brooch has a Trombone clasp closing that is marked 925, meaning it is Sterling Silver.

Looking more like the kind of ribbon one would find on a present, it is composed of 4 main loops, a small center loop that is vertical and two hanging ribbon tails that are notched at the bottom. The ribbon measures a diminutive
1 1/8" wide and 1 2/8" tall.

The "ribbon" is comprised from a very fine and fancy filigree wire that has coiled circles, swoops and swirls throughout.

On the back we see the trombone clasp which is a pull-push fastening mechanism and marked in two places with the Sterling mark of 925. We also see a small disk in the middle of the bow's back marked "900".

So what's up with that? Well, the 925 mark means the clasp is 92.0% Silver and 0.5% copper, or Sterling. The 900 mark means the pin itself is 90% Silver and 10% copper. I can see why they chose to make the ribbon slightly more durable as it would bend easier at 925 being it is filigree. (900 Silver was also called Coin Silver as this was once the amount of silver in coins in the USA, today not so much.)

The entire pin is Gold plated and lets the edges of the ribbon sparkle with the silver showing, absolutely lovely. The gold tests at 10K but is not marked.

This would make a lovely gift for a Birthday, Christmas or other festive occasion.
