A multi tool for men made by the Dilly Manufacturing Co. Inc and sold only from 1957 to 1960 because of a Registered Trademark name dispute this many purposed Nail Clipper was a boon to men of all ages.
Measuring 3 1/8” long and ½ ” wide (closed, without case) it is a full 6” long when the knife blade is opened. It is said to have seven functions, but not being tool savvy I can only find 6, which are Nail Clippers, Nail File, Under Nail Cleaner, Pocket Knife, Bottle Opener and Flat Head Screwdriver. If you know what the seventh feature is please do tell as I have looked at this from all angles and it escapes me.
The light brown all leather case measures 3½” in length and tapers from 1 3/8” wide at the top to ½” at the bottom. The case closes with a substantial snap closure, and comes with its original ball chain to hook it through your belt loop. (perhaps this was the seventh intended feature, easy carrying?)
CONDITION: Excellent Vintage. The Nail Clipper still functions nicely and there is no damage to it. The knife blade is quite sharp so be cautious of it. Some slight darkening of the Nail File, but I believe it to be normal oxidation and should be able to be cleaned nicely. (I would suggest giving the tool a once over with Alcohol to be sure it is sanitized if you intend to use it)
The Case is also in excellent condition with no cracking of the leather and the stitching is intact. I do note one minor scuff to the button which is about 1 mm in length.
FYI: I already knew this was given to my late husband in 1958 when he was a Cub Scout (briefly, but that is another story) what I found through researching the company was that it was made by the DILLY MANUFACTURING CO., Inc. They made the Klipper King in several manifestations, the 4 in 1, 5 in 1 and 7 in 1 starting around 1957.
However the patent for the name Klipper King was apposed by the W. E. BASSETT COMPANY of Connecticut, which made the Kustom King nail clipper and said it was too much alike to be distinguished. The courts agreed and in 1960 Dilly lost the rights to sell these clippers with this name.
Both Companies are no longer in operation today.
