Known as America's last Cruise ship this 5 2/8” long advertising pen is sure to please any collector. From the early 1950s, bought when my late husbands maternal grandparents sailed the Mediterranean on the ships Maiden Voyage, In February of 1951.
Condition is very fine vintage. There is some plating loss on the pocket clip which is minor, and the oil in the chamber that allows the vessel to float has darkened only slightly. There are also a few small floaters in the fluid, which appear large in my up close high resolution photos, but I ashore you they are difficult to detect with the unaided eye. The original ink cartridge is still in the pen but the ink had dried as happens with so many of these old advertising pens. The twist out action of the pen tip still works wonderfully, and I can detect no scratches or breaks or marks on any of the other parts of the pen.
Constructed by Bethlehem Steel in Quincy Massachusetts for the American Export Lines of New York, she was one of the few major cruise ships built in the United States, and the last to be decommissioned in February of 2008. She was sent to the Alang, a Scrap yard for ships in India in 2009.
As a Trans-Atlantic Passenger ship she was built to carry 1,100 passengers. Some of the more notable were the likes of President Harry S. Truman, Alfred Hitchcock, Walt Disney and many others.
Interestingly the Independence was built to adhere to Post-World War II U.S. Navy specifications to allow rapid conversion into a troop ship with a capacity for 5,000 men and equipment. This entailed her being made entirely of non-combustible and fire-resistant materials, along with extra hull plating and two engine rooms, lest one became damaged, so she could keep moving at speed.
I have only spoken of the beginning of this grand ocean liners life, but there is much more history to discover about her. I let this up to you to find if you are interested.
