These beautiful Mid to Late Victorian Vermeil and deep Amethyst colored glass earrings are comprised of a single large (approx. 13mm across) deep purple faceted foiled, flat backed stones which are prong set onto Gold Vermeil screw back findings. Each is marked STERLING twice on the finding end cap, and alas, they are not showing a makers mark.
Gold Vermeil, in case you are wondering, is something that was common when these were made. It consists of Sterling Silver used as the base and a thick heavy coating of Karat Gold overlay on top of it. I have not tested these for the gold content as I do not want to possibly damage them. However 9 and 15K gold were commonly used by Victorian jewelers.
Condition is not pristine, in fact these were well loved and worn often. The stones are in very good shape, a few nicks so tiny you can't see them with the unaided eye. It is only my high resolution and closeup photos that reveal them. They are still very reflective, as you can see they have picked up my workstation and camera, the color is consistent throughout the stones. Different lighting does allow them to cast different color and I have shown several lighting effects in several of these shots.
Also, you can see in my pictures the fastening stem is not completely aligned with the front piece and there is a break in one cup near the base. Neither of these things affect the wear ability of the earrings, but it does affect the price. I also see in my closeup pictures that I had not seen before, is that I missed a spot when I used a soft cloth to polish the stones. Sorry, my bad on that.
