A very versatile egg if I must say so myself, but then I know its history. This was my late Mother-In-Laws Mothers. Louellen, or Lou as she was called was the quintessential Victorian Lady. Everything had a purpose, and except for her table settings, many things did double duty and sometimes triple as she was also very thriftily minded.
Case in point, this 2 1/4” long marble egg. It was purchased on a hot afternoon as she strolled the shop streets in Philadelphia, PA. I don't know if the intent of this egg was to be a hand cooler or not, but marble is a cold stone and even on a hot day will feel cool to the touch. (In Victorian times, before Air Conditioning it was common practice for the ladies to use hand coolers made of glass to cool off as glass was lighter in weight than marble.)
At some point this egg also made its way into the hen house to encourage a particularly reluctant hen to sit on her nest, and later made its way into her sewing box to darn or mend socks. Catherine, her daughter, continued keeping it in her sewing box when it came to her to remind her of her mom. Although she didn't actually use it to mend with, she just enjoyed seeing it there.
When it passed to me I kept it on a shelf beside a picture of Grandma Lou. It is now time to find a new home for this egg as the time I have been preparing for all these years is upon me. I don't know the size of the place I am going to yet, but I know it will be much smaller than I have now.
The egg is most likely Italian Marble. It is as I say above 2 ¼” long and comes to you in a cream color with undertones and veins of green color running through it. It is in excellent condition, and you can even see the fine polishing marks from when it was first made.
I think it would be a wonderful addition to a Vintage Victorian Easter table. Or even by itself on a small tray or dish as a room accent and conversation piece. I hope you think so too.
