This happy guy is straight from Lancaster County Pennsylvania, the heart of “Dutch Country” here in my state.

My portly friend is dressed in traditional Amish britches and suspenders, blue shirt and fur felt hat*. He even has a red kerchief in his back pocket. The painted and incised words that spans around his rotund middle are a traditional Amish saying; “When the Belly's full, the head is at rest.” Which meant; “I just had a large meal, I am relaxing now.” However in the case of this bank it was to mean. “If my belly is full of coins you won't have to worry about money.”

This happy fella was obtained before I met my late husband, so he is at least 33 years old, and likely older. For the longest time I thought he was a knickknack, something folks sit about to look at and doesn't have an actual use. I was surprised to see his hidden coin slot when I picked him up one day. It's right there on the front of his overalls. Don't worry if you can't see it, I have shown you in one of the accompanying pictures where it is.

Signed on the bottom KURTZ, he measures 6” tall, 4” wide and 4” deep (give or take a fraction, he was not easy to measure)

His condition is good. There are two very tiny dings or chips on his hat brim. The one in front is about 1mm wide and the one in back not quite 2mm wide. A third spot on the left side is under the glazing, and was a result of not being painted when made.(because it is a manufacture flaw, and my photo space is limited I have not shown this 1mm spot) There are also several small crazing lines on his face that are hard to see but I have shown them to you in close up high resolution photos so that you can make an informed choice. (meaning they appear larger than they are, but I want you to know about them.) Also, let me point out that his beard is not two colors, however his reflective glazed surface and my lighting reflecting off of him causes this look in my pictures. The bright white spots are also faults of lighting. Additionally, he is missing the cork stopper on the bottom, however I understand that one can get cork or rubber stoppers at craft supply stores.

He is really a fun addition for a collector of banks, or to give a country feel to your vintage home decorating. And your purchase is always unconditionally guaranteed to make you happy or your purchase price fully refunded. Please see my full policy under “Terms” to the right of this listing for details.

A fur felt hat consists of beaver and/or rabbit fur blended with felt to produce a material that lasts 5-10 times longer than wool-felt. A fine Beaver and Beaver blend fur-felt hat can be re-worked and shaped numerous times, and is the best material from which to manufacture hats. (and just to be clear, this one is ceramic)

Lancaster Pennsylvania Amish -The well-known Lancaster County community is the oldest in North America and one of the nation’s two largest Amish settlements. Besides Lancaster, large communities can be found at Big Valley, New Wilmington, and Smicksburg in Indiana County. Pennsylvania is home to over 50 Amish communities.

The history of the Amish or Plain and Fancy People, as they are sometimes referred to, is interesting and many books and online references are available if you are interested in learning more about these colorful Horse & Buggy driving folks.

Always securely wrapped to assure your purchase arrives into your hands as it left from mine. Your new treasure deserves no less.
