Opulence is the word that comes to mind every time I look at this vintage 1960s Five Strand Multi Chain and Bead Necklace with Matching Bracelet that belonged to my Mother-in-Law Catherine. There is so much to consider I am going to ask you to view all the pictures as part of the description on this one.
To begin, the sumptuous bib style statement necklace is a bit more than just five strands of varying kinds and sizes of link chains, which are to the best of my knowledge called Simple Link, Flat Cable Link, French Rope, Curb and Beaded Rope chains.
However, look closely at the inner three strands of chain. The first as you can see begins with the decorated Flat Cable Link chain, however 5 ½ inches of the center changes to no less than four strands of smaller curb chain, laying two on each side of a delicate milky 3mm glass Beaded Rope Chain before turning back into the flat Cable Link chain. The beginning and ends of which are noted with a 5mm milky glass bead. These beads are slightly irregular in shape, and do simulate pearls very nicely, which is what I believe the larger beads are representing.
The second chain thread of the three I am referring to is completely different. It starts with interwoven French Rope Chain links then progresses to five larger Beaded Rope Links 5 to 6mm each that are interspersed between four large 12mm filigreed balls before returning to the French Rope Chain. This deviation in the chain is also 5 ½” in length.
The third chain strand repeats the first, however this time it is a full 10” in the middle of the chain with large 9mm milky white beads to begin and end the repeating chain sequence.
I told you there was a lot going on with this one, and I should note here that the fifth row of chain is actually 3 chains, two rows of curb chains run one on each side of a larger flat link chain to complete this grand design and tie into the coordinating bracelet described below.
Your newest bit of bling measures on the first or top row to 12 ½”, the bottom or last row is 16”. It also has a generous extension which measures from the ball to the five strand bail at 5” and 1 ½” on the hook side, including the J hook. The entire necklace if adjustable from 14” to 19” in length.
Its matching bracelet is 7 ½” long end to end and fastens with a reliable spring clip into a simple round ring. Nice and easy on and off with this setup.
It is reflective of the last row of chains on the five strand necklace, using the flat cable chain one on top and bottom, it has two rows of curb chain in between, with 4 separate chains comprising the bracelet.
Condition of both pieces in this two piece set are Excellent vintage. All metal is bright and has not lost any gold tone plating that I can see. Some darkening can be seen on some links, but this is due to lighting and my dark camera. (I am not a professional photographer) Catherine only bought very good costume jewelry by exceptional manufacturers, so I can only imagine the name that was on the hang tag that came with this unsigned beauty. I haven't been able to find any like it, close but not enough to say who made this one.
