My Father-in-Law not only kept all of the small lapel pins he had, he collected others too. This was his Father's World War Two (WWII) British War Relief Society Thumbs Up Pin. (B.W.R.S) Like so many other families in America, ours wanted to aid the British citizenry during this stressful and turbulent time.
The pin is made of brass and measures (from the bottom of the cuff to the top of the thumb on the right side) 4/8 “ long by just under 5/8“ wide. (when measuring from the thickest part of the hand to the edge of the thumb) We see a detailed hand in the approving “Thumbs up” position, and on the cuff the letters B.W.R.S. Which stand for British War Relief Society. I have shown photo's of the pin on a penny to help you understand the small size and the quality of the detailing that went into producing this item. (Penny not included, meant for sizing purposes only)
Turning it over we see “Patten. Pending” and Accesso (Research tells me this being a partial stamping of the brand name Accessocraft However the “raft” part has not been clearly stamped) It attaches with a Sheppard Hook Pin that extends past the bottom of the pin itself.
Condition is Excellent Vintage. Only slight darkening of the metal on the front as is expected with age. Some darkening on the back. I have not tried to clean this pin.

The United States of America went to war formally in December of 1941, however we became involved long before that in our hearts and minds. September of 1939 saw the start of the British War Relief Society (B.W.R.S.) The BWRS was headquartered on 5th Avenue, in New York City and was started to aid the British General Public in their pressing needs during the beginning of their involvement in that war. It coordinated donations, much like the U.S.O. In seeing needed aid was collected and sent to the proper organizations in England.
ACCESSOCRAFT was in business from 1930 to 1998. Founded by Edgar Rodelheimer and Theodore Steinman. They produced thousands of War Relief Pins in several different styles for the war effort. The companies popularity really came in the 60s when they produced looks heavenly influenced by the Renaissance, Victorian and Art Deco periods, some of which can be seen here on Ruby Lane in other exceptional Jewelry shops.
Comes in a gift box and a presentation bag for gifting to a friend. (or yourself)
