This book is so much more than Mixed Drinks! Yes it is a 1939 First Edition called “Just Cocktails” and was published by “The Three Mountaineers Inc. three buddies that saw a need and filled it.

However it is also a slice of history. Prohibition had just ended 6 years earlier in 1933 and these three friends saw a need to set down “how it was before”. In the book they tell us Cocktails are an American item in no uncertain terms and even tell how the name “Cocktail” probably came to be. We even have quotes from Shakespeare, Thomas Moore, and Omar Khayyam on drinking! They tell us that a “Jigger” (shot glass to most folks) was a full two ounces before Prohibition, but had been changed to one and a half ounces ever since its repeal. And admonish the reader to use two ounces if a recipe calls for a jigger of spirits.

Our book measures 9 1/2” long and 6 wide when closed. Consists of 49 pages plus the index page and glassware chart. Its cover is made of wood and uses copper hinges and leather strapping to bind it. The cover has been engraved with the words JUST COCKTAILS and sports a hand painted rooster dipping into his favorite libation.

Condition is Good Used Vintage. This is a bar book, and it had been used by my father-in-law when entertaining. It does have some age related discoloration to the beginning page, along with two brown spots 7 and 4 mm respectively (they look much larger in closeups) from a spill very long ago. However the rest of the books pages are in very good condition.

The wooden covering naturally does have some age and use marks on it, slight scratches and pressure indentations, but nothing one would not expect to find in a well loved 77 year old bar guide. One other item of note is a 6/8” gash in the spine of the wooden book cover. However this does not harm the integrity of the cover. I will be happy to send photo's of this mark if desired, I had not noticed it till after shots were taken and I thought it best to show inside pages to you. (I can only put so many pictures on each listing)

Otherwise I have not noted any damage or distress to this aged book. But don't take my word for it, try it out and see for yourself. Ruby Lane and I work together to make sure you are completely satisfied when you purchase from us. We guarantee a full refund of your purchase price if you are not completely happy. You don't even need a reason to return the item! Now that is a no risk offer if I ever heard one. Please do read the return policy located in the drop down to the right of this page.

This will make a wonderful Father's Day or Graduation Gift for the special man in your life, the graphics alone are sure to please.
