40s Gold Filled Lock N Key Sweetheart Sweater Pin with connecting chains is sure to steal your heart. Before the 50's Sweater Clips came the Sweater Pins. With longer chains, ours are 7 1/4" and 8", they allowed the fashion on the day to be worn loosely over the shoulders and yet not slide off with movement. One Pin would be affixed to either side of the button front sweater collar. Many times young girls would affix the "Sweetheart" sweater pins over their left side in a pleasing arrangement to show that their heart's were "taken" and in this case Under Lock n' Key.
As noted above our Sweater Pins are attached to each other by two chains. The shorter 7 1/4" chain is the dominant length between key and lock, and allows the longer 8" chain to gently curve beneath it. Our Gold filled Heart Shaped lock Is 1 1/8" wide and 1 5/8" long and 1/8" thick. Boasts of 6 5mm prong set baby blue foil backed stones around the edge. It is marked on the back with either "LINC" or "L INC" as the L runs under the entire length of the word. Beneath this mark we see 120 12K GF, which means 1/20th of the weight of this pin is 12K Gold applied to the surface. I was not able to find information on this makers mark I am sorry to say, so I don't know years of manufacture to pass on to you.
On the other end of our strong link chains is the Key to this Heart shaped Lock, which measures 1 6/8" long and holds one 5mm prong set baby blue foil backed stone and a tiny gold filled flower to add that 40s feminine charm to the piece. The key is not marked.
Condition is loved and used Vintage but still quite lovely. There are surface scratches to the heart, which I suspect come from years of people trying to fully inserted the Key into the lock. It does fit the keyhole, but the pin on the back of the key acts as a stop. The lock is hollow, and not a working lock. I tried to show these fine marks on the front and back in my photo's, but the metal is bright, shining and reflective and makes it hard to do so. Note too the circular 2mm hole on one edge of the pin. What this was for is a mystery, but it was done during manufacture. The entire pin could stand a gentle polish and cleaning, but please, don't immerse the stones in any kind of cleaning solution. a soft damp cloth only to protect the foiled stones. Once the foiling is damaged it can't be repaired.
