This is a wonderful old insurance company magazine called “News from Home”. It is the Spring, 1948 Edition. The cover has a beautiful Dalmatian dog standing in front of fire pump against a dramatic sky. The cover illustration was painted especially for News from Home by artist Rutherford Boyd whose work has also appeared in national magazines. It was edited by Kenneth H. Dunshee. It was published by the Home Fleet of Insurance Companies, 59 Maiden Lane, New York.
This issue features many old time fire companies and many of the fire house dogs and puppies. In the article “I am No 5’s Dog” and other items in this issue the magazine salutes the dogs and other mascots which have won a place in the annals of fire fighting. It also includes a social event where Victor Borge and other celebrities entertained. In addition there is a story about California’s gold prospectors – “The Days of Forty Eight”. The Old Billopp House in Tottenville, Staten Island, referred to as the Conference House is featured in their American Homes article. Not a Dalmatian, but definitely a fond firehouse mascot, is featured the “Nashville Pooch” – an adorable mixed breed. The magazine includes photos of an amateur talent show – remember them? The magazine is full of interesting articles and fabulous old photos. The back cover includes a picture of Gunston Hall and an interesting article about its history.
The magazine does show wear and use and there is some deterioration on the edges of the cover, but is in overall good condition.
It measures approximately 12” by 8 ¾”.
This is a great collectible for anyone who likes to collect art, magazines, ephemera, firefighting memorabilia or old news articles.
