This is a beautifully designed two part bolted centerpiece compote that was made by Rudolstadt Straus & Söhne (Sons) A.G. The company operated from1882 until 1930. The piece is impressed on the bottom with one of the companies marks used from 1895 through 1924. The RW on the mark stands for Rudolstadt Works.
An intricately detailed dragon rises from the footed base. His claws rest upon a gold embossed shield. The oval shaped compote or bowl is decorated on each side with raised medallions and garlands of gold encrusted leaves. The top of the centerpiece is enhanced by stylized scallops and open circles. Each side of the bowl is guarded by delightful mermaid angelic winged cherubs.
The lower portion is painted in creamy off white and gold. The upper console bowl is painted in shades of mossy green, pink, gold and creamy white.
There is a chip on the lower portion of the centerpiece just above the dragon’s head. This can be restored. There are some rough spots around the footed base but there do not seem to be chips. As is usual for the bolted pieces, the two parts are loose and defy attempts to tighten.
The centerpiece measures approximately 15” tall, 12” wide from mermaid to mermaid and 6 1/2” wide.
The centerpiece is attractive from all sides and could successfully be used in the center of a dining table as well as on any item of furniture for display.
