This is a beautiful early black transferware plate made by W. Adams & Sons in the Athens pattern. The manufacturer’s mark is stamped on the back. It has a registry mark that dates the plate to January 3, 1849 and is numbered 56978.
The border consists of flowers and scrolls with 5 cartouches containing ancient temples. The center of the plate has a romantic scene. There is a very ornate fountain, swans, exotic trees and ancient temples. The plate is 14 sided.
It measures approximately 8 3/4”.
Manufacturing anomalies do exist, the occasional tiny iron speck, dust bump and unevenness in the transfer, etc. There is expected light crazing consistent with age. There are no cracks or chips. It is in very nice condition. Please be sure to look carefully at the pictures for condition. This is a really lovely item and an increasingly difficult pattern to find.
