Vintage 1950's Kelly Handbag in Cream Colored Patent Vinyl by Theodor of California
This 1950’s cream colored handbag by Theodor of California features classic Kelly lines. The structured bag is a glossy cream vinyl patent with a gold-tone hinged frame. The purse opens with a rocking clasp to reveal an interior lined in black satin. The interior features a deep pocket with contrasting tawny colored satin lining on one side and a zippered pocket on the other. Four little metal feet protect the bottom of the bag. The maker’s mark is stamped in gold colors on the front of the slip pocket. It dates from the 1950’s and is one of the many handbag designs inspired by Princess Grace Kelly. In looking at the photos from this year's runway shows, we can see that the Kelly bag continues to inspire designers such as Philo of Celine and Mansur Gavriel who have definitely taken a page from this classic look.
The handbag measures 8 ¼ by 10 ¼ inches and is 3 ¼ inches across the bottom. The handle has a 6 inch drop. There is a bit of age discoloration around the edges and on the gold-tone frame, and there are a few pressure marks on the vinyl as well as a tiny snag in the lining. The handbag is otherwise in excellent vintage condition inside and out and has a minimum of the type of scuffing normally seen on patent vinyl. There are no holes, tears, cracked vinyl, stains, or scents. This handbag with its wonderfully versatile color is a true classic!
