This vintage ladies’ Glengarry bonnet is a traditional Scots flat cap with a truly jaunty look. The matching scarf adds the perfect touch! The flat hat and scarf are created of woolen plaid material in Royal Stewart Tartan. The edges of the hat’s side panels are trimmed in black grosgrain ribbon, and it is lined in grey. Beth Stewart, the name of the original owner, and the hat size are printed in blue ink on the lining. There is no maker’s label. The hat does not have a toorie or pom on top, but the traditional black ribbons hang down from the back of the cap. The matching scarf is pleated, and red fringes embellish each end of the scarf.
The inner circumference of the Glengarry hat is 21 ¼ inches which makes it a size 6 5/8 UK or 6 ¾ US. The scarf is 61 inches in length and is 11 inches wide, but when pleated, it is 6 inches wide. The inside edge of the hat has some discoloration as well as a couple of red smudges. The cap and scarf are otherwise in excellent vintage condition with no rips, stains, holes, or scents.
Historians date the Glengarry bonnet to the early 1800’s. The two ribbons on the back are frequently tied in a bow, but traditionally the they were not tied, in part so the rain would wick down the ribbon rather than drip onto the neck. This Glengarry hat and scarf in their vivid red colors and lovely accent colors are great for anyone who loves plaid or who is looking for the perfect hat to wear to the next Scottish festival or event.
