This necklace features a hand-carved pendant of a bear paw with five sharp claws. The stylized pendant was skillfully carved from bone and captures a spirit of strength and ferocity. The pendant has been tea dyed to give it a sense of age. The translucent horn and melon shell heishis compliment the color of the pendant, and textured gold plate rondelles add a glint of light. I chose genuine Nacozari turquoise heishis as an accent color and to give the necklace a Southwestern quality. A hook clasp completes the design.
The necklace measures 21 ½ inches in length, and the pendant measures 1 ½ by 1 ¼ inches. I designed this necklace with both men and women in mind as it is a versatile style, and the length can be changed if you wish. Among Native American cultures, the Bear is considered the most powerful of animals and is thought to be guardian of the earth. The power of the Great Spirit is believed to reside within the Bear, and a bear claw fetish was a symbol of power and protection. Turquoise is often used as a truth stone and a protective amulet as well as improving mental clarity. Warriors or hunters often attached turquoise to their bows to enhance their aim. These powerful qualities augment the fierce design of the necklace!
