The design of this mens necklace relies on colors from canyons and deserts to create a look that is striking and direct. Picture jasper barrel beads form the foundation of the necklace and are alternated with jasper beads in different shades of brown. Because the picture jasper beads have such a distinctive look, I chose to keep the design simple. The beads range in color from desert sand to ochre to bronze to deep brown and black, and each bead seems to capture a tiny piece of a desert or canyon landscape. An antiqued gold-tone hook clasp completes the design.
The necklace measures 20 inches in length which would generally fall between the top and second button of a shirt for a man, but this length can be adjusted if you wish. Each barrel bead is approximately ¾ of an inch long, giving the necklace a bolder look. Jasper has been used in jewelry from ancient times, and jasper jewelry has been found in archeological sites throughout the world. It has traditionally been a warrior’s stone, representing justice, loyalty, and inner strength. It is also considered a stone of strength and vitality and is used to increase creative energy and stimulate positive action. These qualities add dimension to a necklace design that draws on elements of canyon and desert.
