The pendant on this men’s choker features a hand-carved pendant of a bear paw with five sharp claws. The stylized pendant was skillfully carved from bone and captures a sense of strength and ferocity. I chose melon shell and Nacozari turquoise for the basis of the necklace to compliment and highlight the pendant. The Nacozari turquoise is a wonderful quality with excellent color and consistent size. Sections of Nacozari turquoise heishis alternate with segments of melon shell heishis, and silver plate beads separate the turquoise and the melon shell heishis, catching the light and adding contrast. A JBB silver plate hook clasp completes the design.
The necklace measures 19 inches in length, and the pendant measures 1 ½ by 1 ¼ inches. Among Native American cultures, the Bear is considered the most powerful of animals and is thought to be the guardian of the earth. The power of the Great Spirit is believed to reside within the Bear, and bear claw fetish was a symbol of power and thought to provide protection. Turquoise is considered a truth stone and is also believed to improve mental clarity. It has a tradition of protective qualities, and warriors attached turquoise to their arrows to ensure a true aim. These powerful qualities augment the fierce design of the necklace!
