This ruby and emerald choker with sparkling rock crystal combines the luxuriance of genuine gemstones and precious metals to create a classic elegance. I chose a simple design for the necklace, framing the emeralds with the rubies. The design allows the deep red rubies to catch and reflect the light, revealing the heart of these precious stones. The faceted rubies and emeralds are combined with sparkling faceted rock quartz crystals and lustrous gold vermeil spacer beads to augment the effect of the gemstones. The vermeil beads are fluted and resemble golden flowers. Tiny gold beads create separation and allow the light more access to the faceted stones. A lovely gold vermeil toggle with an intertwining pattern completes the design.
The earrings are created from pairs of rubies combined with rock quartz crystal and gold vermeil beads. This sparkling combination hangs from French style gold vermeil earwires, allowing movement to catch and refract the light. The earrings measure 1 3/8 inches from the piercing.
The choker measures 15 ½ inches in length. The faceted rubies and emeralds are 4 mm in diameter and have been heat-treated to enhance the color. They are slightly translucent with inclusions with a slender profile which adds to the evanescent look of the necklace.
Emeralds are the birthstone for May and have been found in precious jewelry dating as early as 4000 BCE. The emerald has long been a symbol of hope and is thought to preserve love as well as bring healing. Ruby is the July birthstone and has long been a symbol of love and desire. Traditionally, rubies were believed to heal emotional and spiritual wounds as well as bless the wearer with wealth, good health, and wisdom. Gold vermeil is sterling silver which is electroplated with yellow gold and has a lovely weight and luster. The combination of elements in this necklace and earring creates a look that is classic and elegant.
