Offered is a delightful, very realistic early 1900s figural parrot or budgie. This charming little bird originally had a purpose, but I am not sure what it may have been. It was sold to me as an antique desk top or writing item, a paperweight of some kind ?. The beak is formed so that something may fit inside and thread thru, but I've not a clue as to what or why. It may be possible that this was a child's toy of some kind or just a decorative item. It most likely dates to the early 1900s ..... 1905 - 1920, late Victorian or Edwardian Eras. It is marked" Germany " on the base, German in origin. I'm not sure what the metal is, it does not appear heavy enough to be cast iron. maybe an alloy of some kind.
This little bird is very life like, it has very expressive eyes and the head is cocked at the right angle. The detailing on the feathers is quite lovely. It reminds me very much of a Vienna Bronze in the way the coloring / painting is done. The bird is in very good vintage condition. There is a tiny bit of paint loss, but nothing distracting and age appropriate. The white looking are on top of the feet is just dust, the little bird has not been cleaned or polished. I've owned it for a very long time and always displayed it with an antique bird cage.
