Offered is a HUGE fabulous Jazz age, art deco flapper jeweled rhinestone bakelite belt. This unique lady's belt is HUGE, over the top and makes quite the statement. It was quite possibly part of a vaudeville or burlesque show costume. It is wonderful to find a celluloid rhinestone brooch or bracelet .... but imagine a whole belt!!! This beautiful old belt measures 40" long wearable length, the drop ornament hangs down 6", and the largest disk measures about 2 1/2" x 2 1/2". I didn't have any simichrome to test for bakelite, but it does not test with 409, so it is probably french / European bakelite or thick celluloid.
The belt is in very good vintage condition with no damage and no missing rhinestones. There is some minor scratching in a few spots, nothing readily noticeable and is mentioned for accuracy. The is a tiny brown spot on one of the rhinestone studded ball drops and that is shown in the photos. The connecting chain looks to be gilt or gold wash over brass. It is possible this is old Czech in origin. Although no art glass is involved, old Gablonz / Czechoslovakia also produced bakelite jewelry.
This is an amazing, one of kind old belt. I've never seen one like it and will probably not a see another. The color of the blue raised disks is a dark cobalt blue, the green is a mottle spinach or "jade" color green. The is also a raised circular design set with a rhinestone on each side of each circular disk giving this piece a very 3-dimensional look. This is a must have piece for any serious collector!
