A lovely Victorian c1870 Mourning Brooch set with small faceted pieces of black Vauxhall mirror Glass on a black painted brass frame. Although difficult to see from my pictures, the Brooch is made to look like a Fern leaf laying across the oval shaped outer frame. In Victorian Mourning traditions, the Fern symbolized Sorrow.
The Brooch measures 1 1/4 inches across and 1 1/8 inches down and fastens with a slightly extended pin and 'C' clasp.
The Brooch is in excellent condition considering its age and delicacy. Although not really apparent in my photos, the Fern leaf is set slightly off-center but this is how the Brooch was made and in my opinion it adds to the individuality of the piece. There are no missing pieces of glass although one piece appears to be missing the end tip (approximately 1/3 of the piece of glass) and three have surface chips, but all this is only visible using a magnifier. Some of the glass also has tiny flea bites, but again these can only be seen using a magnifier. The black paint on the metal frame has worn off in places.
