A beautiful large Victorian Brooch dating to the 1870's which has a carved Mother of Pearl Crucifix attached by two small bolts to a gilded brass base. The Brooch has a ring attached at the top so that it can be put on a chain and worn as a Pendant.
The Brooch measures 1 3/4 inches across and a fraction under 2 3/8 inches down. It fastens with a hinged pin and 'C' clasp.
In excellent condition with no damage, however the pin is a replacement as the original pin was missing. The pin hinge and clasp are original. The pendant ring at the top is also a replacement as there was no ring there although the Crucifix and mount allow for one. The ring is not soldered so it can be removed if you prefer to wear the Crucifix as a brooch.
The carving of the Mother of Pearl is exquisite and there are delicate greens and pinks reflected in the shell although I have not been able to capture this with my camera. The Mother of Pearl is carved to expose the brass base at the four extensions of the Cross so the light occasionally catches the gold color, which adds a further dimension to the appearance of the Crucifix.
A beautiful and rare piece.
