A beautiful antique Victorian Brooch c 1860 representing a winged Scarab which is set with a real iridescent Brazilian Tortoise Leaf Beetle. The Brooch is marked '800' indicating a lower standard of silver than sterling and it is also marked with the number 3. The wings of the scarab are decorated with green, red and white enamel and the brooch is fitted with a safety chain. The Beetle sits on a silver mount so that the underside of the insect cannot be seen.
The Brooch measures 1 inch across and 3/4 inch top to bottom. It fastens with an extended hinged pin and 'C' clasp.
The Brooch is in excellent condition considering its age - the left front leg of the scarab is missing although you have to look very closely to notice. There is some very slight damage to the surface of the enamel in places but you need a magnifying glass to spot it. Most of the dark patches and marks on the enamel which are visible in the photos are actually tiny areas of dirt - I didn't clean the enamel before taking the pictures! The beetle shell is a gorgeous rich green and has no damage.
