Pendant with ancient Byzantine coin depicting Christ.

The description of the coin, from the numismatist reads: Bust of Christ, wearing nimbus crown, pallium and colobium, holding the book of gospels in both hands. In the left field IC, in the right field XC. On the reverse, Eudocia and Constantine. Between them a labarum (banner) with a cross on the shaft, resting on three steps.

Palabium and colobium refer to Christ's garments. ICXC is an abbreviation of the Greek spelling of Jesus Christ.

The coin was minted in Constantinople, circa 1059 and 1077.

The coin is in a simple non-precious gold-tone bezel and hangs from a 30" chain. The pendant s 1 1/8" across. You will note that the bezel does not fit the coin exactly. Ancient coins were struck by hand and were rarely, if ever, perfectly round.

The coin is from the estate of a local collector of ancient coins. It is guaranteed to be authentic, nearly 1,000 years old.

I have added a new brocade silk pouch for safekeeping.
