Large Wayang Kulit (Indonesian Shadow Puppetry) figure, purchased in Bali in the 1970's. It has never been displayed and is in perfect condition. The puppet is approximately 27" high and about 21" across when the arms are folded inward. The buffalo leather is hand tooled and painted in the traditional manner. There is no loss of paint and the joints are all fully functional. It is painted on both sides, as shown - the gold leaf is very hard to photograph well.
Wayang is an ancient Javanese puppet drama that uses the shadows thrown by puppets manipulated by rods against a translucent screen lit from behind. The puppets are made of perforated, elaborately painted leather. Many plays utilizing wayang puppets are set in mythological times and dramatize episodes from the Hindu epics Rāmāyaṇa and Mahābhārata.
This character is Bima, a leading character in the epic Mahabharata. He is a strong and bold character as reflected in his round eyes and wide stance. He is seen as a heroic and powerful figure, yet kind and honest.
This puppet may be displayed framed or could be mounted. The former owner purchased it in Bali in the early 1970's, and is has never been displayed or used.
I can mail this sandwiched between two layers of stiff cardboard. Local pickup may be available in the Annapolis area.
