Romantic roses decorate this charming biscuit barrel or cookie jar. It dates from the 1890's and is 6 1/2" high and about 5" at the widest point. The jar has an embossed pattern and is finished with red roses and fanciful gilt trim. Although it is not marked, it was most likely made in Bavaria.
Condition is very good. The rose design shows minimal wear, and approximately 75% of the gilt trim is intact. The gilt trim was applied and fired last at a lower temperature, so wear is common in older pieces. There are 2 very small chips on the base (please see photo).
The biscuit barrel or cracker jar of the Victorian era was an essential part of entertaining. Today, many decorators use these feminine and flowered designs in the bathroom or vanity, as well.
