Kashmiri Indian papier-mache ( or paper mache) jewelry or trinket box, 3 1/4" x 2 1/2" and 1 1/2" high. It is hand painted with what I think is a lion or lioness on the top and kneeling deer on the sides. These boxes have been made in Kashmir since the mid 1800's and are considered a regional folk art.
This box was purchased in India in the mid 1970's. It is in very good condition, and has a crackled look to the paint, which I assume is due to age. The painting is in excellent shape, but a small area of the clear lacquer coating on the top has been lost.
