Pale green jade pendant with a swirl of apple green, purchased in Thailand in the mid 1970's. The pendant is 1 1/4" x 1/2" (25mm x 14mm). It is carved on both sides with two gourds or eggplants. The original owner was told that the pendant probably dates from the 1930's.
The jade itself is semi transparent, very smooth, nicely carved and polished. In Chinese symbolism, the gourd symbolizes fertility or children. The pendant has no drilled holes. The thinner area at the top is often wrapped with a cord, or the piece can be drilled and fitted with a bail.
The jade pendant was purchased at Uthai's Gems in Bangkok. Uthai's is still a well known and respected jeweler in Thailand, and a favorite of the embassy crowd in Thailand.
