White (very pale grayish green) jade pendant with a small flecks of of apple green in the lower portion, purchased in Thailand in the mid 1970's. The pendant is 1 1/4" x 1/2" (25mm x 14mm). It is carved on both sides with a bird motif. The original owner was told that the pendant probably dates from the 1930's.
Chinese jade carvings have symbols which convey meaning based upon mythology, tradition and sometimes language puns. The magpie is a symbol of happiness or good news.
The jade itself is semi transparent, very smooth, nicely carved and polished. There is no chain or cord.
The jade pendant was purchased at Uthai's Gems in Bangkok. Uthai's is still a well known and respected jeweler in Thailand, and a favorite of the embassy crowd in Thailand.
