This exotic hand embroidered wall hanging was acquired in Thailand about 1970, and is estimated to be approximately 60 - 70 years old.
The tapestry measures 22" across and 42" long. It has been hand embroidered with sequins and beads. The two Thai figures astride lions are defined in couched goldwork and trapunto (padded quilting).
The banner is backed in dark red cotton and has a slot at the top for hanging. The backing cotton has a small tear, as shown in the photo. The piece at the top for hanging (black cotton strip) has loose basting stitches, but can easily be repaired.
Embroideries such as these are still being made in Thailand, but the modern ones lack the exquisite detail of the vintage ones. Please see the close-up photos to appreciate the workmanship.
