Hand painted porcelain brooch with pink single or wild roses. These hand painted beauties were popular in the late 1800's, when china painting was a suitable hobby for refined ladies. Many of these brooches were professionally done, and many were the works of talented amateurs.
This brooch is exceptionally well painted, with roses and buds, delicate shading and a border of gold with moriage accents. The brass backing has an old-fashioned c-clasp. There is very little wear, even under magnification. The gold-colored border is paint with 18K gold powder added. This paint often wears away, but is nearly perfect on this piece.
The brooch is just 15/16" in diameter, which makes the miniature painting seem even more amazing.
